As we get older the focus leans towards our age and the natural aging process we go through. We start to sag and droop in some areas of our bodies but the most age-showing place is our face, neck and hands.
Although I believe we should embrace a less critical standpoint on ourselves, I know to most our society sees wrinkles, sun spots etc as unsightly, so we try to prevent or rid ourselves of the problems. The truth to the matter is that it’s also so very important to protect our skins health, not just the cosmetic value. Prevention is key.
In my previous post I mentioned that I’m beginning to become obsessed with skincare and making my skin healthy and happy. Not because I feel ugly or old but because I want to make sure when I age, I do so gracefully and with healthy, problem free skin.
A goal I have set for the month of July, which is already half-way through can you believe, is to apply sunscreen every single day. This also includes re-applying every 2 hours.
This has been a huge step for me. Not so much the going without makeup part, but the remembering to re-apply it every few hours! It’s like my skin is a newborn needing it’s nourishment every 2 hours. Except it doesn’t cry out at me when it needs sunscreen again haha 🙂
Sunscreen Shield of Approval
Sunscreen will protect from UVA and UVB ultra violet rays. While UVB protection is crucial in preventing burns to the skin and prevention of skin cancer, UVA light rays are responsible for the aging of the skin as they penetrate deep down into the skin’s layers which causes photo-aging.
What Should I Look For?
- Nothing less than a Sun Protection Factor of 50+ a Broad Spectrum lotion/cream that fights both UVA & UVB ultra violet rays
- Fragrance-free, always great for sensitive skin
- Lighter and less greasy formulas will encourage re-application
- Sweat and water resistance
My Makeup and Cosmetics Contain some SPF is that Enough?
Short answer no, it simply isn’t. You’ll need to double up with applying mineral, chemical or combination sunscreens underneath your cosmetics for adequate protection.
I Wear Makeup, How Do I Re-apply?
In all honesty, I haven’t done much experimenting with this. From what I have read, a good technique is to pat it onto your face so that it creates a layer on top.
Yes, I have a feeling depending on the formulation on some of your foundations this may prove a bit strange looking. But your skin’s health is better than vanity right?
Dewy Glow All Day
One thing I have noticed is that my skin not only looks more even and balanced but it looks so dewy and healthy! It could be that the sunscreen I am using has Vitamin B3 in it which helps moisturise the skin but it looks great with a bit of sheen to it as my cheeks catch the light.
I should mention at this point a good SPF 50+ lip balm is also something you might want to purchase next time you’re at your local pharmacy/drugstore if you haven’t got one already.
When you 75 years old one day, I promise you will thank yourself for taking the preventative steps to combat and defend your skin’s health.
Are you applying sunscreen everyday? Let me know below 🙂
Love your health.
