Lip Smackers were my first ever lip product. I wish I could remember the flavour but knowing my child self or heck, myself now, it was probably a purple one I selected off the shelf. Grape maybe?
Ask someone who went to school with me, they’ll always remember I had a lip product in my pocket at all times. It was that and my mobile phone. Before that? My Lip Smacker was stored neatly in the front of my back pack.
I recently pulled out my Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb and as I applied it to my lips, it got my thinking how over time we’ve evolved in the cosmetics world of lip products.
Started from the bottom now we’re here
Lip Smackers. Thanks Bonne Bell for the memories!
Then came those tubes with the roller ball thingies at the top. They’d work for a while, then the ball would pop off slightly and leak a sticky mess of gloss everywhere. The scents were cool though.
Then the tubes with the slanted tips you’d squeeze product out of. Again, they all leaked in the end.
Then I remember using pot lip glosses from the brand Chi Chi. The shine on them was amazing! When I walk around Target, I still desperately look out for them but I’m pretty sure they’re discontinued and the wands and tubes are all the rage now.
Then circa the time Kylie Jenner miraculously grew larger lips, it sent everyone into a head spin. Matte colours had become the in thing. Why? I guess if you overdraw your lips it’s better to do so with a matte shade!
Alas, Jenner then created a cosmetic boom in the industry releasing her Matte Liquid Lipsticks Lip Kits by her own brand Kylie Cosmetics.

So my choice in the debate? I think I’ll always be a glossy girl at heart as my lips aren’t very large and gloss makes them appear larger.
I still have a soft spot for matte lipsticks just because they don’t make me do this at some point in my day *looks below*.
Do you remember your favourite shade of Lip Smacker? Are you a team matte or glossy lips? I’d love to hear your thoughts below 🙂
Love your health.
