Could Using Towels On Your Face Be Bad For You?

I thought of writing this blog post not long after my, “Microfiber Facial Cloth V Facial Brush” post. It got me thinking about how we all use towels to dry our faces and bodies after washing our faces and bathing.

There’s a lot of concern that the use of towels can promote unhealthy skin as, for the most part we hang our towels to dry in a damp and dark area and the bacteria just love to multiply. Then of course we reuse them, sometimes not always before washing them again now think about putting that on your face now. *Yuck*

There’s also the point that they can definitely be just as abrasive as facial brushes, depending on how you use them of course. We’re all told to, “pat dry our faces” and this of course is the best way to use a towel on any part of our bodies. However not using them at all may help prevent water loss and keep your skin more hydrated. That leaves us with some time to wait and let everything air dry but really you can go onto your skincare routine and apply moisturiser to your body, clean your ears, brush your hair just enjoy the pampering for a little because I think we all tend to rush things in life even if they should be a relaxing moment for us.

Here are some helpful tips to keep your towels and microfiber towels hygienic and as antibacterial as possible.

Tips For Germ Free Towels

  1. Wash towels regularly as germs and bacteria transfer from our skin to our towels and washcloths as soon as they come into contact with eachother.
  2. Use a Hygiene Laundry Rinse with added antibacterial and anti fungal ingredients during your wash cycles to eliminate germs. Alternatively use an all natural approach by mixing a few drops of the essential oil Tea Tree Oil into laundry detergent.
  3. Hang your towels to dry in a well ventilated area and preferably in the sun as it’s the best bleach anyone can use to kill bacteria.

Now not everyone is going to stop using towels completely and that’s understandable but if you follow the above tips which aren’t all that difficult to remember, you give your skin priority in keeping healthy.

What colour is your favourite towel? 😀

Microfiber Can Fix Skin Problems?

It’s soft, plush and works a treat with household cleaning. But did you know these little cloths and towels can be used in your beauty and skincare regimen as well?

Well lets get this straight, not the exact ones you’d use for cleaning your TV and car with! Not all of them have the same plush, velvet like softness (sorry shameless plug right here) as my Microfiber Deluxe Fiber Facial Towels.

Velvety, soft and plush. Available on

Plenty of us know good old classic Microfiber material. You’ve probably used it a tonne of times yourself. It’s used a lot as an add on to cleaning products and is great for providing streak free glass and a good old scrub and get any grime off your precious LCD screens. I have plenty of them lying around my house for dusting furniture etc and I know people who own microfiber towels for their hair even.

Microfiber has properties that work wonders when it comes to the house, but can also do wonders for your complexion. Dermatologists recommend a light and gentle form of physical form of exfoliation by either using a washcloth (or microfiber facial towel). Towels and facial brushes are usually not recommended as they tend to irritate the face and a lot of us over exfoliate and create further damage to our moisture skin barrier. Remember our skins moisture barrier is the important area of skin we aim to keep happy above all else as if it’s not happy you can generally tell a mile off.

How To Use A Microfiber Towel In Your Routine?

KISS (Keep It Simple Simon) is the principle I like to suggest when it comes to a skincare routine. Don’t overload your face with a bunch of overly expensive, miracle promising products that are not going to do you any good in the long run. Here’s a sample morning routine:

  1. Cleanse with luke warm water or your favourite gentle cleanser. Massage cleanser with your fingers.
  2. Use circular motions with your Deluxe Fiber Microfiber Facial Cloth on only the areas that require the exfoliation. Don’t rub vigorously, treat your face as gently as possible.
  3. Rinse your face cleanser off
  4. Moisturise
  5. Sunscreen (AM)

The wash cloth can help to remove the build-up of stubborn dead skin cells. Also, the added benefit of a chemical exfoliant can help turn over skin cells faster. Of course the option is yours should you choose to do so. Be careful as to not over exfoliate as it’s very easy to dry your skin out.

I’d suggest you use your Microfiber Facial Washcloth no more than 3 times a week but watch your skin closely for any adverse signs over exfoliation. That’s it! Microfiber has the potential to reduce bumps, closed comedones and create a smoother canvas to paint your makeup portrait.

As always, remember to love your health!

Head & Shoulders Face Cleanser?

As the title suggests, I discuss with you the benefits of using good old Head & Shoulders on your face while you scrub a dub dub in the tub or shower. Honestly, stick around and I’ll show you just how it can work for you.

Folliculitis also known as ‘Fungal Acne’ is something you may have not have realized existed. Fungal acne isn’t actually a real condition as there is no such a thing. I’m going to break it down in layman terms for you and it’s essentially the inflammation of hair follicles caused by excessive yeast growing and living on your face. The difference between Folliculitis and Acne is that it is very itchy as a result of the yeast growth and occurs anywhere from your forehead, jaw line, cheeks, sides of your mouth to your nose.

By the untrained eye it typically is mistaken for acne caused by bacteria and often confused with CC’s (closed comedones, plugged pores). The infection of Folliculitis occurs at the bottom of the hair follicle. This confusion often leads to skin care addicts like ourselves mistreating them with AHA’s and BHA’s. One sign of having Fungal Acne is that you are not responding to the products you’ve incorporated into your routine for treatment of CC’s. Unless of course you have a reaction or allergy, then the product/s should work to break down the skin cells, kill any bacteria causing Acne on your face and you begin to see your complexion clear up after you’ve established a solid regimen.

If you were to pop one of those little bumps they usually secrete a yellow, pus like substance. Gross I know. I wouldn’t suggest doing this yourself either.

So how can you treat it? First I’d recommend you don’t just guess you have it and throw products on your face that could damage your moisture barrier. Have a trained professional look at your skin and properly diagnose. Always.

If you’ve stumbled across this blog post perhaps you’ve already researched the ready available information about using anti-dandruff shampoo in your routine and probably know a thing or two when it comes to skincare so you feel confident enough to try it. Hopefully you’d know what the first important step is starting with P and T (if you don’t know what I meant by that then the next bit really isn’t for you, sorry).

So I will share what I know at least. You will find that it’s common for most Dermatologists to prescribe an over the counter treatment in a liquid topical solution (there are oral tablets however they are prescribed if nothing else works). Ketoconazole is the ingredient added to most anti-dandruff shampoos like more well known Head & Shoulders Classic Clean and Nizoral and treats fungal infections of the scalp or in this case, fungal growth and yeast of the face. Used as a cleanser, lathered up on your face essentially as a mask for around 5 minutes works to kill off any nasty yeast you may have growing on your skin.

A Simple Routine (follow with caution)

  1. Cleanse with your regular cleanser or splash with water
  2. Lather your choice of Ketoconazole on your face and leave on for 5 minutes
  3. Wash off with water and a Deluxe Microfiber Facial Cloth
  4. Apply serums if you’re currently using any in your routine
  5. Moisturize
  6. Apply emollient of your choice when you feel like you need an extra boost of hydration lock in power

Some individuals report that they see results in as little as 3 days of course this will vary on how severe your condition is and could take weeks to months. How often you do this depends. I can’t say what will work but don’t over do it! Testing is the best way to find a balance that works well enough for you without creating too much damage.

Do not fall into the trap of thinking the more times you use it the better and quicker you will see results. More often than not, you’ll find that you will ruin your moisture barrier which can possibly lead to giving yourself acne instead of clearing it instead *yikes*.

Protect Your Moisture Barrier At All Costs

Be sure as to replenish that moisture back into your skin and protect your moisture barrier. Another point to mention is do not use Ketoconazole on your face for longer than 5 minutes and do not over use. This ingredient can be extremely drying to the skin. If you notice redness and dry patches, chances are you’re over exfoliating. Stop and limit products till your skin calms down.

I hope you enjoyed these facts and information brought to you today from DMP Health. Remember to seek professional advice.

As always love your health!

DMP Definitions – Vitamin C

Welcome to DMP Definitions, a new series where I hope to bring you information on some commonly used skin care terminology.

Check out my previous blog, “Skin Care Definitions You Ought To Know” for more 🙂

Today, Vitamin C.

Now I’m not talking about putting orange wedges on your face, or splashing your morning O.J. on your skin as you eat breakfast. Vitamin C is the important ingredient found in those round, juicy fruits and are placed in some moisturizers, oils and serums for the face.

Not only is Vitamin C beneficial for your health in general but it’s other benefits include: anti aging properties, reducing wrinkles, reduction of uneven skin tone, hyper pigmentation marks and it creates more collagen so you have plump and firmer skin. Who wouldn’t want that?

My product recommendation is this one by The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA 2% (HA for getting that moisture back into your skin). I have been using this product for the past few weeks and can say I’ve seen a noticeable lift in the appareance of my PIH. The red marks seem to be fading and I’m happy about it!

So next time you find yourself wondering how you can reduce wrinkles or even out that skin tone, look no further than Vitamin C.

As always remember to love your health and have a magical day!

10 Skin Care Definitions You Ought To Know

Methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, benzalkonium chloride, yeah I’m not even going to try and pronounce those words. I don’t blame you if you try and can’t either!

However this got me thinking about other acronyms and their definitions that I use all over this blog and on my videos.

When I first got into skin care and researching all the beautiful ingredients that could benefit my skin, I was thrown into the deep ocean of words and things I had never heard of. AHA this and BHA that, what’s an HA or sphere?

Like you may be wondering what these common phrases and acronyms are, let me help you learn a thing or two 🙂

  1. AHA – Alpha Hydroxy Acid – Mix of natural and man made ingredients to remove and exfoliate the top layer of skin to reveal the better skin underneath. Helps with skin cell turn over.
  2. BHA – Beta Hydroxy Acid – Work much the same as Alpha’s however target the upper most layer of skin and the pores which can help if you suffer from constant breakouts and acne
  3. Comedogenic – Ingredients that plugs the pores at the hair follicles and creates breakouts
  4. Emollient – Protective layer that can be applied over the top of moisturizers to lock in more hydration
  5. Exfoliation – Process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin
  6. HA – Hyaloronic Acid – Technically a moisturizing agent that keeps the skin plump and hydrated
  7. Moisture skin barrier – layer of skin that protects from bacteria and what you should keep the most hydrated for an optimum complexion
  8. PIH – Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, brown, dark purple, red, pink spots or marks where the post trauma has occurred. Takes a while to fade depending on how fast your skin heals
  9. UVA – Rays cause aging and wrinkles going down deep into the skin causing premature aging and wrinkles
  10. UVB – Burn the skins surface and is the cause of skin cancers

That’s all for now folks. Any other words you’re unfamiliar with? Let me know in the comments below.

3 New Skincare Product Reviews

I’m a skincare, makeup and beauty junkie and I’m forever scouring the shelves to find new products to test and review.

Today I share 3 new skincare products I have been loving lately and what they can do for you too.

Please remember to patch test all new products before applying directly to your face. I have a video especially on that right here if you’re wondering what I mean 🙂

The first 2 product recommendations are by the skincare company called The Ordinary. So if you’re not familiar with the brand The Ordinary is a branch company falling under the umbrella of DECIEM better known as, “The Abnormal Beauty Company”. They’re free of parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, animal oils, formaldehyde, mercury, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, benzalkonium chloride, coal tar dyes, formaldehyde, mercury, oxybenzone. It’s also not tested on animals which is a plus in my book.

Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% – This is a chemical peel formulation of lactic acid and Hyaloronic Acid. Lactic Acid being the most mildest form of AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) making it the most popular you can find. It also makes it perfect for anyone new to experimenting with acids on their face. Hyaloronic Acid actually moisturizes your skin so it’s nice to have the both combined for this product because we all need hydration.

It comes in a frosted, eye dropper bottle with 30ml or 1 fl oz and you can place a couple of drops on your face and rub in with clean fingers. Packaging directs you to use everyday as a PM product but my skin can’t handle that, so I use it 1-2 times a week being careful not to over exfoliate because remember it is an AHA. I actually use a Q-Tip/cotton ear bud to dab it on my closed comedones. What I love about it is that it effectively reduces the appearance of my texture and smooths my skins appearance.

The second product recommendation is Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% – Visibly targets aging skin and uneven skin tone. What I love about this product is that is slowly but surely helping reduce the hyper pigmentation ‘acne scars’ of pinkish, purple and red dots under my skin. It comes in a grey and white squeeze tube and the formula has a very gritty texture and you will feel a tingling sensation. Remember if it continues for longer than 10 minutes then remove it immediately.

Importantly, please be sure to follow a thorough sun protection regimen and reduce sun exposure whilst using these products.

You can purchase The Ordinary skin care products if you’re in Australia from Priceline, Priceline Pharmacies and MYER, UK- ASOS and Beauty Bay, USA and Canada – Sephora. Also check the website for more locations closer to wherever you may live in the world.

Third and final product review is a mask that I picked up on sale 2 weeks ago by my favorite skincare brand Neutrogena.

Flat Lay 5

Hydro Boost 100% Hydrogel Mask -(It’s a sheet mask so be prepared to look like Hannibal Lecter) – Quenches the skin to deeply hydrate and leaves skin supple. I have been on the hunt for a good mask that wouldn’t break me out. I tried clay mud masks before and ended up with a whole heap of closed comedones and threw it out pretty quickly.

Recommendation is to leave on your face for 20-30 minutes for an intense treatment. Why I love this is because it felt so cool, so soothing and nice on my face and certainly left it feeling soft and plump up until the next morning. The only trouble I found was that it practically slid right out of the packet and I nearly dropped it on the floor so be careful with that!

The skin on our face sure needs a pampering once in a while, why not try out these 3 products if you’re suffering with skin texture, aging, uneven skin tone or hyper pigmentation?
